Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

A Good Morning Habit

Breakfast Green Smoothie

For the past four-ish months or so, I’ve been a weekday smoothie breakfast drinker.  I’ve got the quickness down to a science, so I never have an excuse not to devote the six required minutes it takes to start my day off right.

Chia Seeds in Smoothie

It starts with a freezer stocked with various frozen fruits and veggies.  I usually have an assortment of spinach, kale, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, mangos, and pineapple.  And then some chia seeds (or flax or hemp seeds).

Blendtec Smoothie

I fill a Blendtec with 10 ounces of warm water (yep warm!), 1/2 cup of frozen greens, 1-1/2 cups of frozen fruit, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, and let the blender do its thing.  The warm water keeps the juice from turning into sorbet.  Some of my fav combos are spinach-strawberries-mangos-chia and kale-blackberries-cherries-pineapple-chia.

Chicken & Marinated Slaw Pita

December 5, 2013 by Kristin

Chicken Slaw Pita

One of the first {current} roommate memories I have involves an empty house, an empty fridge, and one quart of marinated slaw from Zoe’s Kitchen.  One bite turned into ten.  And ten bites turned into my first Max apology.  Since then, I think about that marinated slaw on the regular.

Seasoned Chicken Cutlets

They also have a chicken pita on their menu that is as simple as a pita filled with grilled chicken and marinated slaw – I love it.  I had it for lunch today and recreated it tonight for dinner.  So really, I love it, love it.

Dressing is from this recipe.

Polenta Pizza

December 3, 2013 by Kristin

What a Monday!  It’s week three at the new job and I couldn’t be happier.  I’ve been getting these bursts of adrenaline and excitement that I don’t remember feeling consistently since 2007 when I worked as a project engineer on this building.  Let me just tell ya, it’s exciting to be excited about {real} work again!

Sliced Polenta

And this excitement, rather than taking away from, is flowing directly into FoodFash.  I drove home with atypical energy for 6-ish o’clock and a huge grin {one of those ear to ear kind}.  I knew from the moment I walked in the front door that I was going to own the polenta pizza I had been dreaming about for days.

Grilled Polenta

I made my own sauce, acknowledging that I prefer my marinara over most.  And then I whipped out the new cast iron skillet that ordered through Gilt a few weeks back.  I stacked and baked and topped and ate.  I was satisfied, completely.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Chicken Tortilla Soup

A weekend full of ACL music, best friends, duck faces, beers, more beers, sitting in the grass, and cold fronts led to lots and lots of sniffles.  And lots and lots of sniffles led to making this soup, one of the best soups I’ve ever made, again.

I stopped at Whole Foods on my way home from work today, thankful for their bulk department.  For a mere 40 cents, I eliminated any sort of which-spices-am-I-out-of guess work (it’s cumin by the way, I’m out of cumin).  And then I got home and mindlessly dumped everything into the crock pot.

Whole Foods Bulk Spices

I ladled myself a bowlful and was quickly reminded how much I adore brothy soups with lime and cilantro.  My roommate dug it too, “This soup is good, Kristin.  Like really, really good.”.
