Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

A Good Morning Habit

Breakfast Green Smoothie

For the past four-ish months or so, I’ve been a weekday smoothie breakfast drinker.  I’ve got the quickness down to a science, so I never have an excuse not to devote the six required minutes it takes to start my day off right.

Chia Seeds in Smoothie

It starts with a freezer stocked with various frozen fruits and veggies.  I usually have an assortment of spinach, kale, strawberries, cherries, blueberries, mangos, and pineapple.  And then some chia seeds (or flax or hemp seeds).

Blendtec Smoothie

I fill a Blendtec with 10 ounces of warm water (yep warm!), 1/2 cup of frozen greens, 1-1/2 cups of frozen fruit, 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, and let the blender do its thing.  The warm water keeps the juice from turning into sorbet.  Some of my fav combos are spinach-strawberries-mangos-chia and kale-blackberries-cherries-pineapple-chia.

Sippin’ On Ginger Juice

It’s been a while since green smoothies have been a thing in my kitchen, but I’m happy to tell you that they’ve most definitely been a thing this week.  I forgot what it felt like to check almost a day’s worth of veggies off your list in one meal.  It’s total meal efficiency and we all know how much I dig efficiency.

When I was putting together smoothie ingredients, I started thinking about which tastes I enjoy most when I treat myself to a juice bar smoothie.  The first flavor that popped into my mind was ginger.  Looking back, I’m  not sure I’ve ever even ordered a smoothie sans ginger!

FoodFash Ginger Juice Smoothie (yields one dinner sized smoothie)

8 ounces of water

1/2 green apple, sliced

1/3 cucumber, sliced

1 inch of ginger, sliced

1 cup frozen spinach

1 cup frozen peaches

In a Blendtec (or Blendec equivalent), add water, apple, cucumber, and ginger and blend until completely smooth.  Add frozen spinach and frozen peaches (they act like ice) and then blend again.  Pour into a super huge glass and enjoy sippin’ on ginger juice!

This smoothie tastes like cold, whippy ginger (according to this guy) and it’s so incredibly slurpable.  If you’re a ginger fan and feel like knocking out 4 to 5 servings of veggies, then this is surely the smoothie for you.

Back In The Swing With @VegaTeam

July 31, 2012 by Kristin

Three weekends in a row of out of town visitors will do a number on a health kick.  So much eating, so much house cleaning, and not nearly enough gym have been the story of my life lately.  And although I wouldn’t have had it any other way (I miss all of my guests like crazy), having some me time is feeling pretty pleasant right now.

The kind folks over at Vega couldn’t have had better timing in sending me some smoothie samples.  Non-dairy days and green smoothie nights are exactly what I need to feel like a normal person again.  Oh and gym, lots and lots of lunch hour gym.

FoodFash Tropical Vega Smoothie

1 serving of Vega Tropical Tango

1 cup of almond milk

1 cup of frozen kale

1 cup of frozen fruit (I used a mix of bananas, mango, and strawberries)

Blend til smooth and enjoy!

Pretty Little Smoothies

January 3, 2012 by Kristin

I’m on my fourth day of detoxing and it’s been much easier than I thought it would be.  I accredit the ease with two things: not working for the past four days and doing a modified detox/cleanse.

The detox supplement that I’m taking doesn’t require a special diet, so I decided to stick to mostly green smoothies during the detox to give my digestive system a maximum break after a few weeks of maximum gorging.  A typical day has been nursing 32-ish ounces of smoothie throughout the morning and early afternoon, snacking on bananas, cooked kale, or nuts when I feel the need to chew, and finishing the day with another smoothie.  Although I’ve rarely felt stuffed, I have yet to feel starving.

Detoxing has also become easier now that the new year is officially here and my friends are just as anxious as I was a few days ago to be nicer to their bodies.  Getting Val to come over for smoothie dinner and Pretty Little Liars was easy peasy.

Side note:  My taste in television is perhaps the least cool thing about me.  It’s been over a year since I cancelled DVR and the only channels I know by heart are ABC Family, CW, and MTV (and only because it’s been channel 66 since my babysitting days).

FoodFash Tropical “Green” Smoothie

yield: about 32 ounces

1/2 cup of aloe vera juice

1/2 pineapple, skin removed

2 inches of  ginger, skin removed

1/2 avocado

1 cup of water

1 cup of ice

Val and I downed our tropical smoothies (followed by berry carrot smoothies) while sitting in teeny-bopper suspense.  It only took one hundred or so self-timer pictures of us watching TV to get one where we actually looked “normal”.

What are your guilty pleasure TV shows?  If one of them is Pretty Little Liars, who do you think A is?!
