First Weekender

February 19, 2012 by Kristin

When I was driving down 6th Street one evening last week I spotted the cutest little spot with the cutest little name: Walton’s Fancy & Staple.  Later in the week I couldn’t for the life of me remember what it was called, but when I described it to my Austin foodie friend, he knew exactly which place I was talking about.  It’s that cute.

Also last week, my friend Nathan that lives in Dallas asked me if I was ready for my first visitor.  My response was somewhere along the lines of “umm heck yeah!”.  I’ve been dying to dive into the Austin restaurant scene (for all 8 days I’ve been here) and knew that eating my way around town with Nathan all weekend would be the perfect kick-off to this new life of mine.

First stop?  Walton’s!

Nathan started with a carrot cupcake topped with cream cheese frosting and darling little veggie art.

I’m not too fond breakfast sweets, so I stuck with a bite of cupcake and a piping hot cafe au lait.  I typically take my coffee black, but something about this soggy, gray morning called for froth.

Just as the last of the cupcake crumbs disappeared, our meals arrived.  Nathan’s plate was hearty bacon centric.  I mean, look at that stuff!  I hadn’t had bacon in ages, but reached over and broke myself off a piece.  Meat is going to happen for me at restaurants in the foreseeable future because, well, when in Rome?  There are too many amazing restaurants in this town to limit my living.

And for me?  Irish oats.  Although satisfying in the flavor department, both Nathan and I were a little disappointed that the oats were over-cooked.  I look forward to the chewy-ness of Irish oats and that was totally missing.  I pretended they were ordinary oats and kept on keepin’ on til the bottom of the bowl was staring back at me.

Now that we’re full-bellied, it’s time to get our shop on!

Gloomy Day Soup

February 18, 2012 by Kristin

Rain, rain, go away!  Or, now that I have this soup and a mountain of clothes that need to be hung, perhaps you can stay awhile?

Avgolemono soup is way, way at the top of my list of favorite soups.  It’s creamy and lemony, filled with comfort, and brings back childhood memories of family trips to the Sponge Docks.  I always assumed it was super difficult to make from scratch, but after today it appears that my assumption was super wrong.  This soup is easy peasy!

FoodFash Spinach Avgolemono Soup Recipe (yield: 4 servings)

6 cups faux chicken broth (I used this one)

2/3 cup orzo, uncooked

2 teaspoons lemon zest

juice from 2 lemons

4 eggs

2 cups of frozen chopped spinach

Bring broth to a boil and add uncooked orzo and lemon zest, boiling for 7 minutes.  Beat eggs and lemon juice together and gradually add 1 cup of boiling broth to the mix while beating (I added 1/3 cup at a time).  Reduce heat to low and add the egg/lemon mixture back to the soup, stirring until blended.  Add the frozen spinach and cook until spinach is thawed.

Not only was making this soup way easier than I expected, it was also more my style than the restaurant version that traditionally contains chunks of chicken and zero greens.  This recipe is the perfect balance of light enough to keep you out of food coma zone, but hearty enough to keep you feeling full.

What meals do you crave on a rainy, gloomy day?

The Good Stuff

February 17, 2012 by Kristin

If it weren’t for the completely awful project that consumes my working hours, you’d have a tough time convincing me I’m not dreaming these days.  Every day since my arrival has been filled with so much of the good stuff, that I can’t even let the “bad stuff” phase me.  Bad project?  Pshhh…  Fire?  Double Pshhhhhh.

After work today, I put on my sneakers, grabbed my sacks, and walked to the best whole foods on this fine, fine planet.  This picture doesn’t begin to do this store justice, it’s huger than huge.  And each and every square foot of its hugeness is filled with the friendliest folks ever.

I picked up some much needed groceries, looking forward to a time when my kitchen is a little more stocked and my market trips are a lot less expensive!

I snacked on some stuffed grape leaves while this sandwich was toasting and then, with a wholehearted grin, gobbled the whole thing up!

Black Swan, In Pictures

February 16, 2012 by Kristin

Breakfast:  Fage Greek Yogurt with Blackberries

Lunch:  Curry & Coconut Oil Acorn Squash with Garlic Knots

Yoga!!!

Post-Yoga Snack: Watermelon

Dinner:  Roasted Tomatoes & Portobello Mushroom with Garlic Knots

I’ve had my eye on Black Swan Yoga since the moment I figured out which area of Austin I wanted to live in.  The studio is steps from my apartment, they offer more classes at more times than you could ever imagine, and you can tell just by reading their website that the vibe is spot on.  When Andrea suggested meeting up for another workout after last night’s boot camp class, I had my fingers crossed she’d want to check out Black Swan.  Finger crossing was unnecessary as she was already a fan.

The power class was great!  It ended up being the perfect amount of strength and stretch for our already aching tush and thighs.  I haven’t been this happy with a studio since YogaSport in Dallas.  Yay Austin!!
