Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

Monkfish!

Monkfish Dinner

Whole Foods HQ is, by default, the grocery store I frequent most.  It’s perfectly centered in the middle of the three places I spend the majority of time: home, work, yoga.  It has everything.  And, buried in the back corner, is my favorite lunch spot in town.

Monkfish

On Fridays, the seafood bar {fav lunch spot} has monkfish as a daily catch. And consequently, the fish dubbed poor man’s lobster, has become my new obsession.  Along with steamed kale, sweet potatoes, and a side of tzatziki.

Coconut Oil & Maple Syrup Sweet Potatoes

I learned quickly that the reason why this can only be my Friday lunch is they only get a small delivery of this fish early on Friday mornings.  So to test this fish dish out at home, you need to pick up a piece no later than Saturday morning.  And let me tell ya, remembering to make a special trip is totally worth it.

The Good Stuff

February 17, 2012 by Kristin

If it weren’t for the completely awful project that consumes my working hours, you’d have a tough time convincing me I’m not dreaming these days.  Every day since my arrival has been filled with so much of the good stuff, that I can’t even let the “bad stuff” phase me.  Bad project?  Pshhh…  Fire?  Double Pshhhhhh.

After work today, I put on my sneakers, grabbed my sacks, and walked to the best whole foods on this fine, fine planet.  This picture doesn’t begin to do this store justice, it’s huger than huge.  And each and every square foot of its hugeness is filled with the friendliest folks ever.

I picked up some much needed groceries, looking forward to a time when my kitchen is a little more stocked and my market trips are a lot less expensive!

I snacked on some stuffed grape leaves while this sandwich was toasting and then, with a wholehearted grin, gobbled the whole thing up!

Day Done Right

October 11, 2011 by Kristin

I baked apple buckwheat muffins last night in preparation for an early morning flight.  I’m really beginning to get the hang of this airport life. Whether that’s good or bad has yet to be determined, but such is life.

As I sat in the early morning, sun-blazed terminal, I was re-reminded how much I love Tampa’s airport.  If it hasn’t won awards for best XYZ airport, it should.  The best.

By the time I landed at DCA and metro’d to Alexandria, it was lunch time.  A co-worker and I headed to Whole Foods for some highly addictive salad bar. Garlicky kale, boiled egg, dill white beans, beets, and broccoli – I wish every lunch could be this green.

I checked into a hotel in Alexandria (rather than my usual Arlington spot), put on some sneaks, and headed to…. Trader Joe’s!

As many times as Ariel’s taken me to TJ’s in LA, you’d think I’d be less surprised at how low the prices are.  Not the case.  Sandwich, veggie, dessert, and tomorrow’s breakfast, all for $14?  It’s both confusing and amazing.

P.S. Gone Bananas! are so darn good.

How often are you able to shop at Trader Joe’s?

Recreating An Obsession

October 10, 2011 by Kristin

If you haven’t tried Whole Foods’ garlicky kale, you’re soooo missing out!  It’s the only raw kale recipe that I’ve tried that leaves me sad when my bowl is empty – it’s that good.

Unfortunately, the Whole Foods salad bar in Tampa is seriously lacking and is missing garlicky kale, among many other things.

Fortunately, the food blogging community is amazeballs and I’m not alone in this garlicky kale obsession.  I used Brittany @ Eating Bird Food’s recipe to the tee and it was spot on.

Have you ever turned to the blogging community to find a recipe recreating a restaurant/grocery store obsession?
