Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

Noah Marion Quality Goods Giveaway

Noah Marion FoodFash Bag

Almost immediately after moving to Austin, it was time for SXSW 2012. Ariel flew in from LA and we took on a very new-to-both-of-us town. One of her friends was working Hype Hotel and had plans to sneak us in to the Miike Snow show.  In the meantime, we sat next door drinking Mexican martinis, asking future friend Noah Marion to take this picture.

Mixing my virtual life and real life together wasn’t quite a thing at that time. But Noah and I began following each other on Instagram the moment that photo was taken.  And then we kept in touch, supporting one another’s projects in the form of “likes” and, from my end, the occasional “I really need one of your bags” comments.

Earlier this month, when I was craving a better than ever giveaway for FoodFash, I sent an email to Noah proposing this very post.  He suggested making a custom FoodFash bag and within days I was in his studio, poking around, asking questions, talking fabric.

It was wonderful putting a real story to an Instagram face.  I learned that Noah studied sculpture at Tulane and had an interior design practice here in Austin.  He described an inherited sewing machine and how the working order or availability of equipment steered his interests over the years.  I saw the first wallet, the first Noah Marion Quality Good, which is where the leather work began.  Then a Kindle case, a Macbook case, more custom requests, prototype creation, a website launch – it was was a whirlwind of a time that I didn’t even realize I was watching.

So back to that custom FoodFash bag…  Here’s your chance to win it! The giveaway begins today and ends at midnight on Tuesday, December 24th.  And then I’ll be making someone’s Christmas extra merry by announcing the winner on Christmas day!

And if you just can’t wait for the winner to be announced and want to purchase this bag, hit up the East 2nd Street Flea where Noah will have six additional FoodFash bags for sale this weekend!

Adding To The Lens Collection

December 16, 2013 by Kristin

About once a year, perhaps once I’ve mastered it, I treat myself to a new photography toy.  This time, I set my Canon wish list aside and ordered the iPhone lens dial.

The dial transforms your phone into 4 different lenses: fish eye, wide angle, telephoto, and macro.  I still have work to do with focusing each lens, but so far… I’m obsessed.

Going on an adventure with a bulky camera bag and having to switch out lenses is not something I ever do.  Rotating between mini lenses on my phone in the midst of adventure – now that’s more my style.

The #Zappos GingerbreadMan

December 14, 2013 by Kristin

Gingerbread Man Cookies

It never feels much like Christmas to me until I’m home with the fam, but baking gingerbread cookies while I waited for friends-as-close-as-family to arrive definitely got me in the spirit.  Welcoming guests into a home that smells like freshly baked sweets… It’s a favorite thing, for sure.

Gingerbread Man Cookie Dough

Earlier in the week, Zappos and OXO sent me box full of baking goodies to help me bring some gingerbread men to life and spread the word that the #zapposgingerbreadman would be arriving in Austin on Friday.  Apparently, he’s wandering around the city handing out prizes all weekend.  Hey Gingerbread Man, size 7 please!

Gingerbread Cookie Dough

When it was time to bake, I used the gingerbread man cookie recipe that was provided in my goodie box, but swapped out 1 tablespoon of ground ginger for 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger.  Fresh ginger in pies and cookies adds a burst of flavor that I can’t get enough of during the holiday season.

Rack of Gingerbread Men

Now it’s time for us to pack some cookies for the road and take miss Juliette on a Christmas adventure filled with gingerbread house tours and the Trail of Lights!

The Gameday Breakfast

September 26, 2013 by Kristin

Game Day Breakfast

As a second generation Florida Gator, I learned the importance of a substantial gameday breakfast early on.  And since I’m a savory breakfast kind of gal, egg sandwiches have always been my gameday go-to.

HEB Spicy Corn Relish

When I opened my September HEB Primo Picks box, visions of spicy egg goodness immediately popped into my head.  I toasted up some sprouted wheat bread, topped with sliced avocados, an over-medium egg, and HEB‘s Spicy Relish that Corn.  I dove in with a fork and knife (which were oh so necessary) and immediately wished I had more avocado so I could treat myself to seconds – it was SO wonderful.

Texas Tea and Vodka

Wonderful and… hot!  I dug through the box to see what I could snack on to calm the burn, when I found the perfect thing: Peach Texas Tea.  And then I thought “if this is a gameday breakfast, then surely this tea should be turned into a cocktail”.  So there ya have it!  As I cheer on the Gators in Austin this season, I’ll be enjoying a Texa-fied start to my gameday with a spicy corn relish egg sammie and a Texas Tea with a splash of Tito’s.
