Moroccan Mint & Elderflower Iced Tea

May 15, 2012 by Kristin

I love elderflower.  If a cocktail menu has a French 75 or St. Germain anything listed, it’s as good as mine.  So when I was making Moroccan mint iced tea this morning and glanced over at the bar, my head tilted and I thought “why not?”.

As I filled a pot full of water, it dawned on me I didn’t technically know how to to make iced tea.  I usually make a single serving on the fly, but it’s been ages since I prepared a pitcher.  I turned to Savory Sweet Life for guidance as I had no time to mess around, I had a picnic to attend!

When the tea finished steeping, I removed the bags and poured over ice.

It was at that point that I added 1/4 cup St. Germain, 1/8 cup of pure maple syrup, and crossed my fingers.

Although this lightly sweet tea was uber refreshing, the green tea overpowered any trace of elderflower.  But this isn’t the end of elderflower iced tea for me, I’ll be testing out less potent teas with more quarter cups of St. Germain til I get it right.

Chop Chop

April 5, 2012 by Kristin

You know how most of the time you finish eating a salad, not because you’re full, but because you’re over it?  Then two hours later when you’re prematurely starving again, you’re like “man I wish I would have finished that salad”?  Number one reason why salad choppers are magical.  They allow you to turn a boat load of greens into a normal sized portion that’s super filling and far from boring.

They also allow for a perfectly even distribution of ingredients and dressing.  A Type A personality’s salad dream!

I’ll be making a lot of chopped concoctions over the next few weeks, so I hope you’re as eager about de-fluffing for summer as I am.

A FoodFash Chop

Handful of greens (I used baby romaine)

2.5 ounces of solid white albacore tuna in water

1/2 avocado, roughly chopped

1/2 green apple, roughly chopped

1/3 cucumber, roughly chopped

1 tablespoon Vegenaise

1 tablespoon white balsamic vinegar

Chop, chop, chop and enjoy!

Gimme That Sauwce

March 28, 2012 by Kristin

If only I had a dollar for every time I realized how easy something is to make that I, at one point, believed would be super difficult.  I’d have oh so many dollars!  Like maybe enough to buy these…

But can you believe I had never even glanced at a hollandaise recipe before?  For someone that loves the stuff so much that I might just choose eggs benedict as a last meal, you’d think I would have hunted down a recipe just for kicks.

But nope.  It took two artichokes and a little boredom with butter to initiate the search.  The search which ended almost as quickly as it began because I ended up using the first recipe that came up on Google, which was perrrfect.  Perfectly creamy, perfectly zesty, perfectly spiced.

Missed the artichoke mash I made a while back?  Check it out!

Lunch Date Fail

February 23, 2012 by Kristin

At 12:20, I grabbed my phone, texted Kim “see you at 12:30!”, and then quickly realized I left my wallet in the purse I took out last night.  Ten minutes from meeting a new friend and… no money.  Thankfully she understood and we’re rescheduling for next week!

But the whole no money thing meant having to rush home for lunch.  I was instantly saved by a short commute and lots of frozen veggies.

FoodFash Veggie Orzo

1/3 cup orzo, uncooked

1/3 cup frozen asparagus

1/3 cup frozen spinach

1/2 tablespoon butter

1 slice of cheese (I used havarti dill)

Prepare orzo per the package instructions.  During the last minute, toss in frozen veggies.  Drain orzo and veggies and place into a bowl.  Add butter and cheese and stir until melted.

I used the 1/3-cup measure for the veggies since it was already on the counter and it ended up being the perfect amount of green.  You could also use broccoli/edamame/peas/any green veggie as well as any variety of cheese that you’re fancying at the moment.

Have you ever arrived somewhere and realized that you had forgotten your wallet?
