Oh how I love, love, love Péché!  My friend Nathan took me here the second weekend I lived in Austin and it’s held a special place in my heart ever since.  And the only thing that’s kept me from blogging about this love is that it’s pretty darn dark in there and I typically don’t fancy carrying around my camera after an absinthe or two.  If you follow me on Instagram, I’m sure you’ve seen a Péché post or seven.

This was my first Sunday visit, so Skylar and I were able to take advantage of all day happy hour which consisted of select $5 cocktails and half off  some bar food items (this is the case on Mondays too).  Naturally, my cocktail of choice wasn’t on special, but I ordered it anyway.  I refuse to deviate from the Absinthe God or Silver Monk (top left).  They both contain egg whites and they are both my most favorite cocktails in all of the land.  Seriously.

And typically I’d order something very Kristin-esque, like the sage gnocci or a seafood dish on the daily menu.  But today I wanted something on sale something adventurous, so I went with the burger du jour, which was topped with duck liver and housemade picked vegetables.  And although I’ve ordered few burgers in my lifetime, I can tell you with certainty that this burger was more melt-in-your-mouth amazing than any burger I can recall.

Happy Friday!

Val and I kicked off her second weekend in Austin by heading to the heart of downtown and eating some fancy BBQ at Lambert’s.  Although a Texan would frown upon taking a visitor to fancy BBQ, to a Florida girl, pulled pork covered in sauce is where it’s at.  We both cleared our plates and headed across the street to ACL Live to get our listen on.

ACL Live was such an awesome venue!  The stage could be seen from every spot and the acoustics were top notch.  It was also super easy to get a cocktail, which was important since we didn’t love the bands that were playing.  We headed out early and walked down the street to Péché, which is perhaps my favorite all around spot in Austin.

I introduced Val to absinthe and, as a fellow black licorice lover, she thought her cocktail was life-changing.  I stuck with my go-to’s, the absinthe god and the silver monk.  Val went with the tru blood and death in the afternoon, which both were straight up absinthe and champagne.  Did you know that mixing absinthe with champagne is a Hemingway creation?  A bartender that can get nerdy about booze… Love.

We finished off our night with an olive oil cake desert that was served with meyer lemon sorbet, candied nuts, and cream.  We cabbed home, completely satisfied with all that we packed in to another super fun girls’ night.  Happy Friday!

On The Books

August 3, 2012 by Kristin

For one reason or another, I hadn’t seen Skylar since my birthday.  There’s no excuse, but I’d like to blame it on her being a teacher and me being ridiculously jealous of her summer schedule.  But now that her vacation is almost over, I figured it was time to get a date on the books.  I sent her a calendar invite and we stuck to it.

We started out at Cru for half priced bottles of prosecco and cheaper than cheap apps.  And although I wouldn’t order food there again, half priced bubbly could be worth a second trip.  On our way to Peche, we noticed a lone musical soldier playing in the Cedar Street Courtyard.  I couldn’t help but get Miike Snow’s “Song For No One”  stuck in my head…

Peche was on point as usual.  I couldn’t bring myself to order absinthe on a Thursday, so the bartender jazzed up a traditional cucumber gimlet with some bitters.  I haven’t had a flawless off-menu cocktail since  my regular Tampa hangout.  It was nice.

As Skylar and I parted ways in 100 degree Texas heat, we assured each other that we wouldn’t let time fly quite as easily again.  We made plans for a yoga brunchtastic Saturday, plans that I plan on sticking to!
