Music: Levitation Festival

Levitation Festival Austin, TX with Kids

Why Levitation Finally Filled the Fun Fun Fun Fest-Sized Hole in My Heart

I have so many thoughts on Levitation Music Festival. What I’ll start with is this: when I saw the location and lineup, it felt like the first fest that could finally fill the hole in my heart that Fun Fun Fun Fest left behind. The very first outdoor show did just that. There’s something magical about our city skyline behind a stage.

As the weekend went on, bouncing easily between two stages with sunshine outside and arctic AC inside, surrounded by incredible art and top notch vibes, I stopped chasing what I had been missing and started appreciating Levitation for everything it truly is.

I was able to bring Ez with me on Friday thanks to the simple logistics ($10 garage parking next door!). I discovered La Femme, who is now joining my music rotation that’s remained relatively untouched since 2013. And I danced my heart out to one of my all-time favorites, TV on the Radio, who somehow make every show feel like the first time.

Huge thanks to Levitation for the media credentials that let this shortie take it all in up close. You have made yourselves a super fan!

And for anyone who is over the mega fests (I feel you), Levitation is absolutely worth a shot next year.

Yams & Jams

May 16, 2013 by Kristin

Sweet Potato with Greek Yogurt

Yams & Jams…  I couldn’t help myself.  Even though what I was eating was totally not a yam, it just happened to be close enough and rhyme with jam.  I rolled with it.  If you’re curious about the difference between sweet potatoes and yams, this link explains it pretty well.  And if you’re curious about how I ate my sweet potato – I sprinkled with a little salt, dolloped with a ton of plain Chobani Greek yogurt, and smashed it.  I made a meal of it.

As far as jams go – one of my favorite bands, The National, is releasing a new album next week.  And rather than listen to the streaming of their new album, I decided to play through my old favorites and share them with you.

Concrete Wins

I’m going to put a super positive spin on work, namely estimating lots and lots of concrete, stealing all of my energy this week.  There’s no baking, no yoga, no happy hours.  But!  There’s lots and lots of music listening.  These songs have been on heavy rotation this week, allowing me to sneak in the occasional grin and shoulder shake at my desk.  Enjoy!

And My #SXSW13 Vacation Begins!

March 13, 2013 by Kristin

I am officially off of work until the 18th and plan to soak up as much SXSW goodness as possible.  I started last night by picking up the INDMUSIC fellas from the airport and getting them badged, housed. and fed.

(INDMUSIC & Ariel/Kristin Dinner During SXSW12)

A little backstory…  Brandon and I met at a happy hour in LA during my first Ariel visit in 2009 – pre-FoodFash, pre-INDMUSIC.  We remained friends over the years since he’s good buds with Ariel and I spent more time in LA than one could possibly imagine.  I started FoodFash and moved to Austin, Brandon started INDMUSIC and moved to Brooklyn, and SXSW12 and the virtual world kept us in contact.

(A Lockhart BBQ Trip During SXSW12)

Last night, I took the crew to South Congress Cafe where they soaked in the quaintness of the restaurant and Austin in general.  And then they updated me on all the wonderful things that INDMUSIC has had their hands on lately.  Like have you heard of the Harlem Shake?  They are not only responsible for monetizing any video playing the Harlem Shake song, but they created the technology that connects a band’s YouTube page views with their ranking on sites such as Amazon, which subsequently affects Billboard rankings.  It’s a pretty big deal and you can read more about it here!
