Yams & Jams

May 16, 2013 by Kristin

Sweet Potato with Greek Yogurt

Yams & Jams…  I couldn’t help myself.  Even though what I was eating was totally not a yam, it just happened to be close enough and rhyme with jam.  I rolled with it.  If you’re curious about the difference between sweet potatoes and yams, this link explains it pretty well.  And if you’re curious about how I ate my sweet potato – I sprinkled with a little salt, dolloped with a ton of plain Chobani Greek yogurt, and smashed it.  I made a meal of it.

As far as jams go – one of my favorite bands, The National, is releasing a new album next week.  And rather than listen to the streaming of their new album, I decided to play through my old favorites and share them with you.

Concrete Wins

I’m going to put a super positive spin on work, namely estimating lots and lots of concrete, stealing all of my energy this week.  There’s no baking, no yoga, no happy hours.  But!  There’s lots and lots of music listening.  These songs have been on heavy rotation this week, allowing me to sneak in the occasional grin and shoulder shake at my desk.  Enjoy!

And My #SXSW13 Vacation Begins!

I am officially off of work until the 18th and plan to soak up as much SXSW goodness as possible.  I started last night by picking up the INDMUSIC fellas from the airport and getting them badged, housed. and fed.

A little backstory…  Brandon and I met at a happy hour in LA during my first Ariel visit in 2009 – pre-FoodFash, pre-INDMUSIC.  We remained friends over the years since he’s good buds with Ariel and I spent more time in LA than one could possibly imagine.  I started FoodFash and moved to Austin, Brandon started INDMUSIC and moved to Brooklyn, and SXSW12 and the virtual world kept us in contact.

Last night, I took the crew to South Congress Cafe where they soaked in the quaintness of the restaurant and Austin in general.  And then they updated me on all the wonderful things that INDMUSIC has had their hands on lately.  Like have you heard of the Harlem Shake?  They are not only responsible for monetizing any video playing the Harlem Shake song, but they created the technology that connects a band’s YouTube page views with their ranking on sites such as Amazon, which subsequently affects Billboard rankings.  It’s a pretty big deal and you can read more about it here!

Shut Up And Play The Hits

July 19, 2012 by Kristin

It’s hard to believe a month has gone by since I obsessively refreshed Alamo Drafthouse’s website, checking multiple times a minute for hours, waiting for tickets to become available for LCD Soundsystem’s documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits.  Six-ish hours later, I had four tickets for me and the boys.  “Your persistence is appreciated”, Matt said.

We arrived about an hour before the show and held a pretty solid place in line.  I was expecting zigzagging lines around the building in July heat, but that couldn’t be further from what happened.  Cushy seats in the front of the line with ice cold beers and AC was more like it.  We were…  So. Excited.

The documentary was everything I wanted it to be.  The scenes switched between live footage from LCD’s final show to interviews before and life after, all in a way that made sense.  I danced in my seat as I experienced the emotions of a man who single-handedly crushed his own dream.  James Murphy, a man so terrified of fading away, that he created his own burn out.  I wonder what Neil Young and Kurt Cobain would have to say about this?
