Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

The #Zappos GingerbreadMan

Gingerbread Man Cookies

It never feels much like Christmas to me until I’m home with the fam, but baking gingerbread cookies while I waited for friends-as-close-as-family to arrive definitely got me in the spirit.  Welcoming guests into a home that smells like freshly baked sweets… It’s a favorite thing, for sure.

Earlier in the week, Zappos and OXO sent me box full of baking goodies to help me bring some gingerbread men to life and spread the word that the #zapposgingerbreadman would be arriving in Austin on Friday.  Apparently, he’s wandering around the city handing out prizes all weekend.  Hey Gingerbread Man, size 7 please!

When it was time to bake, I used the gingerbread man cookie recipe that was provided in my goodie box, but swapped out 1 tablespoon of ground ginger for 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger.  Fresh ginger in pies and cookies adds a burst of flavor that I can’t get enough of during the holiday season.

Now it’s time for us to pack some cookies for the road and take miss Juliette on a Christmas adventure filled with gingerbread house tours and the Trail of Lights!

Christmas Party Recovery

December 10, 2011 by Kristin

Last night was the first company Christmas party I had attended since 2008. The construction industry was full of doom and gloom and I just didn’t have it in me to get all dolled up just to chat about recent and upcoming layoffs.  Kinda killed the Christmas spirit, ya know?

This year was different.  The doom was replaced by hope and chatter of layoffs was replaced by chatter of new babies.  The setup was tasteful, the food was tasty and the cocktails…  Well, the cocktails went down a little too easy.

We even kept the celebration going by heading to Fly Bar afterward!

But continuing the party made for a super sluggish Saturday morning.  Green tea, Earth Balance noodles, and nap.  No bueno.

I woke up from the nap feeling like a new person and craving my favorite breakfast: egg and avocado on a sprouted wheat english muffin.  I changed it up by sprinkling with crushed red pepper.  Yum!

Now off to meet Lex, who just moved back from Texas!!

Happy Easter Bunny!

April 25, 2011 by foodfash

For as long as I can remember, the highlight of my family gatherings (other than seeing my family, of course) was whatever Uncle Roy was cooking (because everything he touches turns to culinary gold) and Uncle Danny’s ginormous seafood and wine contributions.

And since, historically, trips to Uncle Roy’s house equaled Kristin binge eating sessions, I was a bit apprehensive for Easter dinner.  Especially after the Taste of South Tampa caving incident…

I turned to my good friend, wine, for support.

And then my mom arrived with the most beautiful deviled eggs EVER.  Mom to the rescue!  She pickled eggs with beets and onions and then did her usual deviled egg magic.

My contribution was Basil Vinaigrette that I swooped up from Whole Foods on the way.  I poured some on a plate to be sopped up by the bread that Uncle Roy picked up from the Sponge Docks and used some more for the salad bar creation that I brought for my meal.

The salad consisted of mixed greens with edamame, garbanzo beans, beets, red onion, and wheatberries.  Although it was a pretty decent mix, I much preferred the mushrooms that were sauteed with white wine and olive oil and more deviled eggs.

And then it was time to entertain The Pie.

One.  Two.  Three.  Meltdown.

And we’re back!

Hasn’t anyone told you it’s tough being two?

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter!
