Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

2014 DaVinci Storyteller Experience

DaVinci Wine & Bruschetta

It’s been a few months since returning from the 2014 DaVinci Storyteller Experience.  At the end of September, I was whisked away from my busy bee life in Austin and placed in the middle of Tuscan hills with a handpicked group of amazing people and a dream itinerary.  The only moment of the trip that felt like real life was the return flight home.  And over a month later, memories of this adventure continue to cross my mind on a daily basis.

Even though our Tuscan days were scheduled by the hour, life abroad felt slower, intentional.  We sat as a group for every meal.  We conversed.  We laughed.  We shared {DaVinci} wine.  And every meal was merry.

In between meals, we were learning.  Whether it was about traditional Tuscan cuisine, the history of DaVinci, the work that goes into each bottle of wine – we were soaking it all up. We were a foursome of merry American sponges, eager to learn what every person we encountered was willing to share.

Often times, the vineyard was our classroom.  Standing among grapes ripe for the picking, we’d learn about the co-op of growers that make up the Cantine Leonardo DaVinci and how there is a cap to how large each vineyard can be to ensure quality is the growers’ main focus.

We’d have a front row seat as the growers pulled up to a machine that tested the sugar content of their grapes.  We’d learn that the higher the sugar content, the more growers would earn for their grapes.  DaVinci Wine, along with making sure vineyard sizes were manageable in relation to the quality they expect, incentivizes their growers so they continue to produce the best grapes, year after year.

Sugar Content

And then we’d get to experience first-hand how much thought goes into combining harvests from all of the growers to create each year’s perfect vintage.  Sitting in a laboratory with unmarked bottles of wine, we were tasked to submit percentages of each sample that made up a bottle of Chianti.  It was the most fun I could ever imagine having in a laboratory!  And although the preciseness of the vintage shouldn’t have come as a surprise, when we found out the actual percentages, it was nothing short of surprising.

It was an amazing seven days made even more amazing by Storyteller company.  It took approximately four hours for us to be close enough to share our quirks and bury ourselves in inside jokes.

Inside jokes that were so endearing, we were able to recruit Giacamo {of DaVinci Wine} to take part in the fun.  The picture above captures Karen, me, Giacamo, Jen, and Celeste making “cava face”, the face that happens when you’d rather be discussing/drinking Italian prosecco versus Spanish cava.

And this picture… captures the smile that accompanied me during the entire 2014 Davinci Storyteller Experience.  Words cannot express how thankful I am to have been chosen for this Tuscan adventure.  And I look forward to the time we all meet again, with glasses of DaVinci wine in hand!

Welcome To Casale Di Valle!

Vinci 01

It seems like just yesterday I received the phone call letting me know I had been selected as one of four storytellers in this year’s DaVinci Wine Storyteller Experience.  Details were provided, time flew by, and before I knew it, I was flying across the Atlantic wondering what I had gotten myself into.  Obviously it was going to be great. Obviously. But I couldn’t yet picture how it would all come together.  The flight over felt much like Christmas Eve – if the Santa list was forgotten, courage to sneak a peak through wrapping paper was lost, and present destiny was in someone else’s hands.

Vinci 02

Thankfully I had a day in Florence to adjust.  A day to walk miles and miles from one side of the city to the other and back.  A day to live in a typical hotel, with a typical staff, and typical amenities.  A day {after 20 hours of travel} to completely wipe myself out and sleep the heaviest of sleeps.  I needed this exact combination of things to prepare me for what was about to come.

Vinci 03

As soon as we arrived to Casale Di Valle, we were welcomed by gorgeous Tuscan views, a warm-hearted crew, and the comfort of knowing that every experience during this upcoming week would be better than anything we could have anticipated.  Every sight we saw was magical.  And how could it not be?  We were in the middle of a 16th century hunting lodge with 360 degree surrounds of vineyard.

After touring the property, each of the storytellers were led to their rooms.  My path consisted of walking up a stone stairway with rope handrails, down a long, narrow hallway that branched off to a secondary kitchen, sitting area, and large, formal dining room, which led me to the Rose room.  A room so cozy, I couldn’t wait to unpack my belongings and call home for the next week.

Vinci 06

After a few minutes to let it all sink in, we regrouped downstairs for lunch under the gazebo.  A gazebo with a built in pizza oven that we’ll soon be using to bake homemade pizza!

Vinci 16

I could dance around adjectives for hours to find a way to describe our lunch only to arrive back at the word perfect, so I’ll stick to lunch was perfect.  Bruschetta, salamis, prosciutto, grilled bread drizzled with olive oil, a selection of cheeses, and an abundance of DaVinci pinot grigio – I couldn’t have dreamt up a dreamier meal.

Vinci 10

We cheersed the first of many cheerses and, once again, let it all sink in.  We are here, at the Casale Di Valle, for the next week.  And in the next week we will create memories that will be incomparable to anything any of us have ever experienced.

NYC Adventures

Alphabet City

It had been over five years since I last visited New York.  But for one good reason or another, LA is how I had chosen to spend {almost} all of my spare time for as long as I can remember.  That is until Jackie and Agie {pictured below} did a stellar job of convincing me that a visit to their city was long overdue.

So I purchased a ticket for Labor Day weekend that landed me on a rooftop in Alphabet City with two long-time friends and a couple bottles of rosé.  After lots of cheers-ing and catch-up, we walked downstairs for our dinner reservations at Root & Bone, headed back to Jackie’s rooftop for dessert, and then made our way to another rooftop for a birthday party.  Within hours of being in New York, I had already soaked in the most gorgeous of city views.

Tompkins Square Bagels

Being the early riser that I am {these days}, I woke up the next morning and ventured out solo on a mission to find a gluten-free bagel.  I landed at Thompson Square Bagel: cash only, line out the door.  It was decidedly perfect.  Jackie met me in Thompson Square Park, where we snacked on our bagels, snuck in some people watching, and planned our day.

PS1 Warm UP

We spruced ourselves up and hopped on a train to Queens for the second to last PS1 Warm Up of the season.  The second we stepped foot into the courtyard, I knew this would be a favorite of this trip.

PS1 Warm Up

Music, architecture, art, perfect weather, enjoyable company, crisp wine on tap, fashionable folks in every direction – I fell in love with the day.

Sunday was a slower start.  We lounged around and took our time getting ready before getting our lobster roll fix at Luke’s Lobster.  Luke’s Lobster, which not only had a gluten-free bun, but rolls with so much lobster meat and just a tad of butter and mayo.  This roll replaced any memories of lobster roll past and became the ultimate foundation for another daytime dance party.

This time we ended up in Brooklyn for the Tiki Disco party, where we met up with Shayne and Bret {two more forever friends from home}.

It was an incredible feeling to be in such a unique setting so far from home, but have bits of middle school, high school, and college past in a single scene.  We danced, we had the time, we ended up at a bar in Brooklyn that was playing The National {a favorite of mine from Brooklyn} as we walked in.

And then it was time to create our last memory of this adventure.  Agie suggested we lunch at Reynard, insisting we complete my visit with a perfect table followed by a perfect view.  What we didn’t anticipate, was squeezing ourselves together on a banquette upon finishing our meal and ending this trip with the perfect giggle.

Thank you both for such a fun-filled weekend – I will certainly be back soon!

Milwaukee Adventures

Milwaukee Public Market Lobster Dinner

My new favorite thing is combining out of town wedding weekends with mom/daughter trips.  Last June, we adventured to Sonoma for Ryan’s wedding weekend.  And this past weekend, we met in Milwaukee for Steph’s wedding.

St. Paul's Fish Company Oysters

Immediately after dropping our luggage off at the hotel, we headed to the Milwaukee Public Market, where I remembered having a big ol’ lobster during a previous visit.  We ordered St. Paul Fish Company’s lobster dinner as well as two of every oyster variety on the menu.  Our favorites: Blue Point, Karheen Pass, Charles Island – permanently added to the memory bank.

Ardent Milwaukee Escargot

After a much needed nap {6 am flight!}, we were off to Ardent for dinner. Finding this somewhat hidden gem on the James Beard “best new restaurant” nominee list led to some sky-high expectations, but it was apparent that Ardent was up for the challenge.

Ardent Milwaukee Beef Tartare

We ordered almost everything on the menu: escargot {pictured above}, salt roasted celeriac {mom’s favorite}, milk pan au lait, beef tartare {my favorite, pictured above}, beef with turnip greens, the parsnip dessert, and a bottle of red. The mom-daughter-duo was in agreement that this was one of the best meals either of us had ever experienced.  And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, our server delivered two macarons {that we “cheers’ed} and a wrapped breakfast bread for the next morning with the most adorable note.  The entire night was to a tee!

Milwaukee Brat House

Saturday day was filled with site-seeing and cheese browsing.

Pier Wisconsin Wedding

And then I was off to Steph and Jon’s wedding at the Pier Wisconsin.  So. Beautiful.  The entire night was filled with happy tears, laughter, old friends and new.

Pier Wisconsin Wedding 2

And on our last day, the mission was brunch.  We walked a seemingly hefty hike to Blue Jacket, another place on which I had done some mini research.

Blue Jacket Bloody Mary

We learned that Milwaukee bloody marys are served with a beer shooter {Austin bloody marys should follow suit}.

Blue Jacket Milwaukee Grits

And the biggest lesson of all, Southerners aren’t the only folks capable of making perfect grits.  Andouille sausage, brussels sprouts, pickled asparagus, and a slow egg – the combination that topped these smoky, cheese grits was phenomenal.

This trip was the perfect combination of quality time and quality food.  The only thing I would have done differently is snap a few shots with my mama, who is unpictured in this post!
