Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

Total 180

July 6, 2012 by Kristin

I went to sleep before fireworks even thought about exploding in the sky last night – I was beat.  I woke up approximately 12 hours later, unsure of when it was, where I was, what was going on at all!  Sunday?  Monday?  Thursday!!  Ugh…  Needless to say, I was entirely too disoriented to pack a gym bag for a lunchtime workout.

I was freakishly motivated after work though.  I changed into running gear and created a super upbeat playlist.  I was convinced that all the circuit training I’ve been doing lately had prepped my body for a three mile run, maybe even four.  I was about halfway to the gym when I received a text from the boys “Headed to El Arroyo”.  There was no thinking involved.  The 180 degree turn was immediate, my workout was derailed, and I was on my way to eat, of all foods, Mexican.

I managed to keep it pseudo healthy by ordering a bean stuffed avocado with mushrooms and spinach.  I ate about a third of the chips I would normally inhale and chugged water like nobody’s business.  I honestly thought I could still work out after dinner, but as I approached my apartment, I couldn’t resist.  And then my phone rang.  And then it was over.  No gym.

I caught Hansell up on what he needs to pack for his visit next week (hooray for another visitor!) and then packed my gym bag and prepped some halibut for tomorrow’s lunch.  With preparation like this, certainly there will be lunch gym tomorrow!

Fourth Recap

July 5, 2012 by Kristin

Hope everyone had a wonderful ‘Merica day!  My day got off to a super slow start, but I woke up knowing I had to pull it together to wear my 4th of July bathing suit, drink some American beer, and most importantly…  Test out Dickie Boards!!!

Ever since I moved to Austin in February, I’ve heard Dickie (pictured above) talking about his new paddle board company.  I had a mini idea what they’d be like, but didn’t know entirely what to expect.

At first glance, I was already excited!  Aesthetically, they were nicer than any board I had ever seen.  Bamboo boards and paddles with color coordinated grips and rims?  Dickie Boards are sharp!  But the best part was the ride.  They are shorter and thinner than the boards I’m used to, which meant you had a ton more control of the board.  I loved using my core and slight bends in my knees to weave through boat traffic rather than back paddling like an Austin Powers champ.  I can’t wait to ride these boards all summer!

Congrats and thank you, Dickie!!!

Bastrop & Blues

June 28, 2012 by Kristin

If anyone ever needed a reminder of how wonderful Austin life is, Blues on the Green is a good start.  It’s amazing how many people come out every other Wednesday to gather and get their rock n’ roll on.  Amazing.

Over the weekend, Billy mentioned that his friend Lee was looking for some ladies to hand out koozies for his new business at this week’s Blues.  And since I love to make cocktail induced commitments, I quickly committed Kara, Jodie, and myself to hand out 1,000 koozies in blazing hot weather.  Hey Kara and Jodie, you’re welcome!

The new business?  Bastrop River Company!  Bastrop offers tubing, paddle boarding, and kayaking a bit closer to town and at a fraction of the price as other river adventures.  Ohhhh and the best part?  Beer is legal in Bastrop!  A recent ban on cans could set you back a whopping 500 bucks if you’re planning on drinking on the Guadalupe.  And since tubing and cold beers tend to go hand in hand, I’d say checking out Bastrop is most definitely the way to go!

And as far as the thousand-koozie-task-at-hand?  Total success!  Not only did we have a blast and get nicknamed “The River Ladies”, we also managed to hand out every single koozie in less than 30 minutes!  We were pleased as punch and signed ourselves up for handing out another thousand in two weeks.

If you’re out and about at Blues on the 11th, keep an eye out for The River Ladies and be sure to get yourself some Bastrop swag!!!

Meeting @JoyTheBaker!

June 21, 2012 by Kristin

Last night was full of firsts.  First book signing, first time meeting Joy the Baker, first time meeting up with other members of the Austin Food Bloggers Alliance.  It was….  overwhelming, full of hiccups, but totally good.  As Joy would say, it was real life.

Julie and Jessica met me at BookPeople about an hour before the event was scheduled to begin.  We chatted it up, aware of any movement behind the curtain that could have been Joy.  Meanwhile, Megan and Steff held down a table at Contigo.  We coordinated through Twitter and concluded that it was up to me to invite Joy to dinner.  Uh oh, yikes, WTF, why me?  All thoughts that cruised through my head at an unimaginable pace.

When I approached the signing table, the only words word I could manage to squeeze out was “hi”.  Then silence.  Thankfully Joy is, self-admittedly, no stranger to awkward, and was able to get a mini dialogue going.  Mini, mini, I mean mini.  But!  I was able to use Megan as my crutch and let Joy know that we had a table at an Austin hip spot off the beaten path and that she should join.

I headed to Contigo to make sure we had enough space and Julie and Jessica stayed behind to assure Joy I wasn’t a creepster re-invite her to dinner.  Julie and Jessica arrived at Contigo, sans Joy, and we ordered food and cocktails and began to get merry.  Shortly after, Megan informed the table that Joy was on her way.  Really!?!?  Perhaps the awkwardness was more endearing than creepy…  Perhaps.

Joy plopped right down next to us as if she was meeting old friends.  And in a way she was.  After all, we knew years and years of Joy the Baker’s story.  But what we got for the next few hours was a bit of Joy Wilson’s story.  I will remember last night as the night I sat next to Joy Wilson on a picnic bench, slurping cocktails, sharing stories.  And for that memory, my friends, I am thankful!
