Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

Turmeric Butter Coffee

March 20, 2017 by Kristin

I bailed on SXSW festivities this year. I’m tired. I’m stressed. I’m filled with a little bit of rage and a heck of a lot of passion. And as I work through it, I don’t have an interest in wearing myself even further.

I wish I could tell you that I spent the week of SX 2017 catching up on sleep. I didn’t.

But I did make some killer progress on restaurant construction in spite of the best efforts of some to make me stumble. I did use this week as an excuse to take a break from restaurant eating by highlighting my favorite Austin spots for #SXSW attendees. And I did use rainy evenings to my advantage by convincing my SX visitor friend, Heidi, to skip events and watch rom coms.

SXSW ended yesterday. Without attending any official events, I woke up at 6:30 this morning feeling the need to create. I caught up on Instagram while I waited for the sun to rise. And as an acceptable time to work on a Sunday rolled around, I glanced over at a stack of magazines Heidi left behind.

I whipped up my go-to turmeric butter coffee and spent the rest of morning in the studio with my camera, magazines, and a revived desire to continue the hustle.

Bacon, Egg & Cheese Crescent Rolls

October 23, 2016 by Kristin

breakfast-crescent-rolls

The holidays are quickly approaching, which means get-togethers and baking galore. And while our social media feeds will be filled mostly with sweet treats and holiday meals, I’ll continue dreaming up savory breakfasts {my favorite!}.

Pillsbury crescent rolls are a convenient {and delicious} way to wrap up your favorite breakfast ingredients. What you’d ordinarily stuff in a breakfast taco or kolache will work wonderfully wrapped in this buttery dough.

When I asked the Instagram world “what are your favorite ingredients to stuff inside a Pillsbury crescent roll?”, I was amazed at many creative responses I received! Jalapeño cream cheese, pepperoni pizza, spinach artichoke dip, cinnamon apples, Nutella, sausage. Every single suggestion sounded oh so delicious!

But the combination that won me over this go around was egg, bacon, green onions, and sharp cheddar. Let me just tell you, this is a glorious way to start a morning! Green onion gives the crescent roll a nice complexity and thick slab bacon adds a crave-able savory smoke. When prepared and heated up the next day, these breakfast crescent rolls are still top notch.

Chocolate, Coffee & Cherry Protein Shake

September 28, 2016 by Kristin

Chocolate Coffee Cherry Shake

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, it’s impossible not to notice how many “#media” burgers I’ve eaten recently. I’m fairly certain I’ve consumed more burgers this month than ever in my 33 years. And while I love eating {and photographing} a beautiful burger, my body just isn’t equipped to handle heavy food. Much like a child who’s eaten too much candy, I get sick and tired and grumpy {like really grumpy}.

But I’ve been having so much fun bouncing around town with my favorite bloggers/Instagrammers that turning down events doesn’t feel like a good option {right now}. To combat the negative, I’ve tried to keep non-media meals nutritious and light and not feel obligated to eat everything on my media-meal plate {only eating one bun or splitting with a friend}.

This chocolate, coffee, and cherry shake is my go-to when I’m on a tight morning schedule because it allows me to combine caffeine, protein, vitamins, and a serving of fruit. If things don’t go as planned throughout the day or I have an event, I feel better having had at least one balanced meal.

Avocado Toast – #ForHereFromHere

June 26, 2016 by Kristin

Yellowbird Avocado Toast

Earlier this week, Ozarka Water sent over a box of local {to me} products and asked the question, “Why do you love where you live?“. The box alone {provided by a company that comes from three Texas springs} represented one of the top reasons I love Austin, TX – it’s chock-full of entrepreneurial spirit. Almost everyone you meet has a side project, runs a start-up business, or has established a local brand. I’m confident you could survive in this town solely by shopping local. And I just couldn’t be an ounce more happy to call Austin, TX my home.

Another reason I love Austin is that, not only are there so many wonderful grocery stores in a close proximity, but each of those stores makes an effort to support and highlight local products.  For example, the Yellowbird hot sauce that was included in the box.. I already had {and always have} in my fridge. And it’s not uncommon to see Yellowbird dominating the end cap at Whole Foods or Central Market – both born in Austin, as well.

Queso

One of my favorite activities this summer has been rooftop grilling get-togethers at my friend, Jackie’s, apartment. This has also been the perfect venue to share the products I’ve been sampling with my friends, like the Paqui’s tortilla chips and Cookwell & Co. queso {pictured above} and Jelly Queen’s steak seasoning {pictured below}. A common theme with local food companies is quality ingredients, so it made complete sense that the queso was made without cheez product, chips without GMOs, and spice mix with organic ingredients.

The un-pictured items that we incorporated into our rooftop gathering were Snow’s BBQ Sauce and Taste Elevated’s sweet and spicy mustard seeds.  All of the products mentioned above added a layer of fun and excitement to our evening!

And since moving to Austin in February of 2012 {4-1/2 years ago!}, home-cooked weekend breakfasts have become one of my most treasured times. I love waking up, moseying to the kitchen, whipping up something delicious, sitting down with a cup of coffee, and taking my time enjoying all I’ve prepared. Below are instructions on how to make one of my frequently made take-your-time breakfasts, avocado toast.
