SXSW Schedule – First Blush

March 8, 2013 by Kristin

You know… I promised myself I wasn’t going to involve Excel in my SXSW happenings this year.  But for the same reasons that I can’t handle the surprise of gift receiving, I couldn’t help it.  The unknown is scary for me, even when it comes to tunes.  Besides, I didn’t even open Excel.  Google Docs… Completely different.

Zilker Park Kite Festival 2013

March 6, 2013 by Kristin

I never, not for one moment, forget how wonderful Austin is and how lucky I am to be here.  But days like the Zilker Kite Festival, when there are no less than 20,000 people gathered under the sunshine and a clear blue sky…  Gosh, you can’t help but wonder how a place like this even exists.

IMG_4255

Matt, Snoop, and I flew our lady bug and Ninja Turtle kites, respectively, without a hitch.  We were even able to let out all the string, which I had never been able to accomplish before.  And Snoop, oh Snoop, was a sneaky little pup and stole a shrimp from our picnicking neighbors.  We all won a little bit during kite festival day!

Who knew an almost 30 year old could have this much fun flying a kite!

If you have any Instagram/Twitter pictures from Sunday that you’d like to share, please feel free to post a link to the picture in the comments below.

Homemade Pizza & @DickieBoards

March 5, 2013 by Kristin

IMG_6133

This past weekend, I invited the boys behind Dickie Boards over for some homemade pizza and nerd Q&A.  I prepped my go-to pizza dough recipe  (the original) and went shopping for classic toppings while the dough was doubling in size.

Pizza 1: Pepperoni with Red Peppers.  Pizza 2: 1/2 Carmelized Onion, 1/2 Plain Ol’ Pepperoni

We worked on graphics, listened to old recordings of the Rolling Stones playing with Muddy Waters, drank leftover Cheer Beer (does beer go bad??), and devoured all of that pizza.  Scratch that, Brett and Dickie devoured all of that pizza.   Bottomless pits, I tell ya!

Be sure to show Dickie Boards some love in the virtual world!  You can follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to keep up with the latest #enjoytheride happenings on the lake.

Tagging Along With @MelissaSkorpil

March 2, 2013 by Kristin

IMG_5959

Last week I had the pleasure of tagging along with Melissa and Olivia for one of their sessions at photogroup.  Melissa is a food photographer in town who I became friends with through the Austin Food Blogger’s Alliance (an amazing group of food loving folks!).  And Olivia is a food stylist that writes a column at Honest Cooking and works at a favorite restaurant of mine, Elizabeth Street Cafe.  Needless to say, I spent a bit of my afternoon among the most awesome of company.

IMG_5949

Their mission for this shoot was to practice unconventional food photos for both of their portfolios.  The feel of the first shoot, the beet shoot, was dramatic in nature.  Bloody red beets, a ruffled  black cloth, and delicate white plate that was both resisting and begging to be covered in red.  Oh and dim, dim dun dun dun lighting.  Perfecting a photo in intentionally dim light takes an extreme amount of talent.  I enjoyed watching the challenge these two charged themselves with.

IMG_5934

My favorite part of the shoot was seeing all of Melissa’s equipment and how it was integrated with the studio’s equipment.  I learned about active and passive fill light.  I learned that there are tools that wirelessly connect your camera to your Mac so you can instantly see imperfections and correct them immediately in your next shot.  But most importantly, I re-learned how much fun it is to collaborate with like-minded dreamers.

Thank you Melissa and Olivia for letting me spend some studio time with you!  I enjoyed it oh so much!
