Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

Foreign Cinema

Foreign Cinema San Fran

We went out with a bang on our last foodie adventure in California!  We sat at a cozy, little table at Foreign Cinema and began to analyze the menu.  What was special?  What couldn’t we get in our respective hometowns?  What hadn’t we already experienced on this trip?

Foreign Cinema San Fran 2

Although my mom can get seafood a plenty in Florida, I’ve been struggling to find oyster-seeking friends in Texas.  My eyes lit up when I saw Plateau de Fruits de Mer.  I saw her see me and then say something like, “well, I’m sure this is Pacific seafood that wouldn’t be as fresh near me.”.  Moms are the best.  We ordered it.

We ordered the plateau, zucchini soup with porcini, dungeness crab gratin, and chocolate pot de crème.  And everything, to the very last drop, exceeded any positive word I could manage to dig up from a thesaurus right now.  So I’ll leave it at that, indescribable in the best way ever.  Just like the time spent with my mom, how fitting.

Heading To Sonoma

So it’s that time.  Ryan, my brother from another mother (notice the ginger locks), is getting hitched.  He and Jen are getting married in Sonoma and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.  I’m heading out there for a Wednesday to Sunday trip and taking my mom along for the culinary ride.  The greatest of friends, my mama, wine, food, food, wine.  Srlsy.

Cafe La Haye

Other than wedding shenanigans, I have two restaurants on the books: Cafe La Haye and Foreign Cinema.  Cafe La Haye came highly recommended through John Baydale, the president of Uchi Restaurants (thanks again for that one, Molly!!).

And Foreign Cinema was unanimously suggested by three of my ultimate foodie friends that frequent the San Fran area.

I cannot, cannot wait for this adventure to begin.  See you soon, Ryan & Jen!

#FBZFest Taste Pavilion

October 23, 2012 by Kristin

While coming down from being all sorts of chocolate wasted, we headed over to the next official festival event, the Taste Pavilion. We were greeted at the entry with colorful macarons and reminded-at-first-bite that the belly could handle no more sweets. Even though there were loads of baked goods ahead of me, I had to pass them up – I was on a savory mission.

I was able to snap photos of most of the food that saved my life my favorite samples of the day. The Asian pork sliders were equally as cute as they were delicious. And they were a total reminder of how badly I want to order a slow cooker so I can satisfy my super strange pork cravings the homemade way!

The most interesting sample I tasted was from a West African catering company located in San Francisco. The vegetarian square of bean goodness was different than anything my palate had ever come across. It was cozy, flavorful, and fresh. And it gave me the inspiration to research Nigerian cuisine for future experimentation on le blog.

My favorite booth, for many a reason, was Alaska Seafood. Not only were their dishes AMAZING (see above and below), but I was able to run into Greg of SippitySup and give him big hugs. Also at this booth was a blogger that I’ve been wanting to meet, Kristy of The Wicked Noodle. We talked about their recent adventure to Alaska and ate more than our fair share of seafood samples. It was good times for sure!

And then we hit a wall. A full-of-yummy-food-must-get-to-our-hotel-room-and-put-on-sweatpants wall. Jessica, Devon, and I mad-dashed to our hotel room and did just that. We changed, watched the Gators whoop some Gamecock butt, and rested up for the gala.
