The #Zappos GingerbreadMan

Gingerbread Man Cookies

It never feels much like Christmas to me until I’m home with the fam, but baking gingerbread cookies while I waited for friends-as-close-as-family to arrive definitely got me in the spirit.  Welcoming guests into a home that smells like freshly baked sweets… It’s a favorite thing, for sure.

Earlier in the week, Zappos and OXO sent me box full of baking goodies to help me bring some gingerbread men to life and spread the word that the #zapposgingerbreadman would be arriving in Austin on Friday.  Apparently, he’s wandering around the city handing out prizes all weekend.  Hey Gingerbread Man, size 7 please!

When it was time to bake, I used the gingerbread man cookie recipe that was provided in my goodie box, but swapped out 1 tablespoon of ground ginger for 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger.  Fresh ginger in pies and cookies adds a burst of flavor that I can’t get enough of during the holiday season.

Now it’s time for us to pack some cookies for the road and take miss Juliette on a Christmas adventure filled with gingerbread house tours and the Trail of Lights!

Merry Christmas!

December 25, 2011 by Kristin

Making pies for family holidays has been my thing since I was old enough to reach the stove.  I loved staying up all night with my grandma, measuring, rolling, stirring, sneaking bites of pie dough here and there.  As I got older, not much changed.  I still love using mid-century cookbooks covered with spills and the occasional burn.  I still love my grandma catching me eating dough and acting surprised, as if she hasn’t told me I shouldn’t be eating raw dough since the late 80s.  And we still make five pies: two pumpkin, one lemon meringue , one custard, one mystery.

Mystery pies from previous years?  Pecan, chocolate, apple, coconut cream, cherry.  Mystery pie for this year?  Strawberry rhubarb!

Strawberry rhubarb pie has been on my radar for quite some time now, but for some reason, I’ve always been intimidated by lattice pie crust.  It mayyyybe took 10 minutes.  I love/hate when that happens!

When I took the last pie out of the oven and looked at the clock, I couldn’t believe it had been 6-1/2 hours since I sifted the first cup of flour.  Does 6-1/2 hours of baking mean I deserve 6-1/2 slices of pie after dinner?!  I sure hope so!

Wishing you and your family a super merry Christmas!

‘Tis The Season

December 2, 2011 by Kristin

Until today I hadn’t really been in the Christmas spirit. But today, I felt mushy. I felt like being a part of the holiday happenings around the office with my work peeps, some of which I’ve known going on eight years now. Total mush.

It didn’t take much convincing to let me play A Very She & Him Christmas. I was both surprised and thankful.

Distracting myself with ornament art while the lights were being placed on the tree was a fantastic plan. Does anyone actually like the lighting part??

Not I, not I.

Pretty neat stuff, huh?

We cleaned up the glittery mess and posed in front of our work-themed work of art.  If only every day in the office could be this much fun!
