Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

Yum Yum Stumped

October 6, 2011 by Kristin

Warning!  It’s about to get gluttonous.  Like ‘placed an order for one and the restaurant delivered plasticware for two’ gluttonous.  Oops!

The Thai/American version of Yum Yum Can I Get A Scoop?  Heck yeah!

And I mustn’t forget the Yum Tofu, staple of my DC work trips.

And some foggy soup.  I ordered the mushroom dumpling soup, but ended up with shrimp dumplings.  Not nearly as good, but satisfied my broth craving fo sho.  (Side note: As I hyperlinked the restaurant below, I read that the shrimp dumpling had chicken.  Bummer.  Kind of grossed out.)

I wish I could wrap my head around how Urban Thai is able to make their tofu so crispy yet so full of citrus vinegar goodness.  I’m sure it has something to do with a deep fryer that refuse to own, but still!  Perhaps if I broil the tofu almost to tofu crouton status and soak it in an amazing dressing that I have yet to create I’d be one step closer.

Any ideas?

Avocado Shmavocado

September 13, 2011 by Kristin

After my last run-in with an Asian avocado salad, it’s pretty much a guaranteed order if I see something similar on a menu.  And although tonight’s avocado salad was completely different, I enjoyed it just the same.

I ventured to the other side of 23rd Street for the first time in ages to check out a place I had never been before, Boru.  And to tell you I was weary when I approached the entrance is an understatement.  Loads of paper signs posted on the window reassuring you a place is open, well… it isn’t very reassuring at all.

I could have lived without the eel roll pictured above, but the tuna nigiri met my sushi expectations.  The wasabi stuffed center was a nicely welcomed, spicy surprise.

On the way back to the hotel, I stopped and bought a bottle of red to celebrate my last night away from home.  For various reasons, I’ve missed home a bunch during this trip.

What do you miss most when you’re away from home?

A Gray Day

September 9, 2011 by Kristin

It’s been non-stop dreary since I arrived in DC on Tuesday.

And usually dreary weekdays at home equal movie time with this guy.

But since I’m not home, I ordered delivery (again) and tried to replicate an HLS meal as closely as possible.  Cremini mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, artichokes, truffle oil, and Daiya pizza on whole wheat crust from Zpizza.

Now back to work!  One more day o’ meetings til the weekend!

Have any fun plans for the weekend?

Not Ideal… Not Ideal At All

September 8, 2011 by Kristin

Simply put, today was terrible.  Like 9 hours of back to back meetings and thinking that you have the chicken pox terrible.  What?  Chicken pox?  Yes… Chicken Pox.  Never had ’em.  But more realistic than pox was probably the woody photo shoot from Saturday.

Apparently I was attacked by something from the nature world.  So it looks as though I’m neither athletic nor outdoorsy.  Thank goodness for being cook-y and crafty, right?  Oh, and Calagel, thank goodness for that, too.  I put my label reading skills to the test to find which product had the most of everything relief related.  Calagel won and it worked.  Highly recommend the stuff.  Saved my life.

When I got back to the hotel, I placed a delivery order with Urban Thai, knowing they already had my address on file.  Yum tofu and supposed-to-be vegetarian pad thai.  Here’s to hoping my leper-ness goes away before my weekend with Emily!!!

Are you the one that always gets bitten in a crowd or are you the luckier sort that leaves the nature scene bite free?
