Cooking Planit T-fal Giveaway: Cookware Review

August 28, 2013 by Kristin

Salmon Cakes

It’s less than a week until the Cooking Planit T-Fal Giveaway on FoodFash begins!  To stir up excitement, I decided to bring back my most popular recipe to date (salmon cakes) and see what these T-Fal frying and saute pans were all about.

T-Fal Cookware

At first glance, these pans felt much sturdier than your typical non-stick variety.  The stainless steel added an extra weight that assured me that heat would be distributed more evenly, even on my slightly crooked range.  And that red circle in the middle of the pan?  A heat indicator that shows you when the pan is perfectly pre-heated and ready to sear your… salmon cakes.  An unexpected surprise that surely wouldn’t have been a surprise had I read some fine print along the way!

Salmon Cake Ingredients

I plopped the salmon patties on the hot surface and waited for it to do its thing.  And while the salmon cakes were a cookin’, I heated up some coconut oil in the saute pan and added green beans, almond slices, and garlic salt.  Veggies and nuts, simple and good.  Always.

And when it was time to flip the cakes, I reached for the metal spatula that came with the T-fal set.  Metal?  I’m fairly certain I’ve been scolded well over a handful of times for using metal on a non-stick surface.  I proceed with caution, ate the salmon and veggie dinner, hand-washed the pans, and then sat in front of the computer to write this post.  And then, just a moment too late, read that T-fal pans are dishwasher safe and scratch resistant (meaning they are safe to use with metal utensils).  Good to know!

Also good to know that this set is oven-safe up to 350 degrees.  Weekend frittatas are totally up next!

My Craftiest Craft

August 26, 2013 by Kristin

Clothespin Instagram Art

My craftiest craft has been sort-of-in-the-works since ordering a boat load of my Instagram photos from Printstagram.  Within a week, I had 48 vibrant, square memories ready for something.  And other than hanging from a “wire”, I hadn’t a clue of what that crafty something would be.

Vintage Window Picture Frame

Months of staring at a stack of photos later… I decided to Google through my thoughts and hope to find exactly what I wanted.  I landed on this photo and was almost equally as stuck.  It’s pretty darn frustrating to know what you want, but not know how or where to find the pieces to get there!

Where would one find an oversized vintage frame for under 400 bucks?  Clothespins?  Better yet, weathered clothespins?!  Oh and this weekend.  I was determined to finish this project before the weekend was up, so Etsy and Amazon weren’t even options for this girl on a mission.

I ended up finding a huge stock of vintage windows (original glazing!) on Craigslist, conveniently, within a few blocks of my house.  Twine and picture hanging hardware were acquired from Michael’s.  Clothespins and spray paint from Zinger, a local gem.  And then I hammered and nailed and hung my way to the most special thing I’ve ever made in all of my existence!

An Evening With Say laV

August 23, 2013 by Kristin

Say La V Austin 1

I texted Molly mid-way through the day asking if she was up for something social after work.  She responded immediately saying “you read my mind!” and forwarded a happy hour invite.  An evening of sampling Say laV eats and Hotel Vegas drinks?  Sure thing.

Moscow Mule

As soon as we arrived, we headed straight to the bar to pick up icy cocktails in an honest attempt to brave the 100 degree heat that was waiting for us out back.  Moscow mules, Pimm’s cups, and sticky bangs.  It was happening.

Say La V 5

We parked ourselves at a picnic table and the food was immediate.  First up was fig topped pate and melon/salami/basil skewers.  Both of these hit all sorts of spots at our table.  The herb/meat/melon combo is certainly a thing right now and I love it.  And the pate, which is rarely my thing, became my thing when it was paired up so perfectly with fig.

Say La V Austin 3

Lamb burgers with a hearty slice of red onion and a dollop of tzatziki… brought me back to the days of living near good Greek food.  I ate two.

Say La V 4

Pulled pork tacos and blistered shishito peppers.  I tell ya, this night was one for the books!

Say La V Austin 2

And to satisfy any sweet teeth in the crowd, they served sweet potato donut holes.  These were Molly’s favorite.  She ate four two.  Maybe two and a half?  Regardless, she deserved it.  Thanks Miss Molly for another unexpectedly wonderful night on the town!
