Adventure Begins in the Kitchen

Big Sur Vacation

Lucia Lodge_

For as long as Ariel has lived in Los Angeles, she’s wanted us to tack a Big Sur road trip on to one of my visits.  But because a five-ish hour journey {in addition to a flight} seemed like craziness, it continued to be something we only dreamt about.  That was until I was invited to tour a vineyard in Carmel Valley with a plus one.  Naturally my West Coast bestie would be my date.  And a vineyard adventure a few towns over from Big Sur was the perfect opportunity for us to realize our road trip dream.

Lucia Lodge Flowers

Knowing food choices would be scarce in the mountains, we stopped at a Whole Foods in Santa Barbara to stock up on picnic fare.  Wine, cheese, salami, and berries – our picnic meal was going to be better than anything even the best of restaurants could offer.

Big Sur Cliff View

We arrived at our destination, Lucia Lodge, to find that we hit the visual jackpot.  The lodge,  ten of the quaintest cottages set as close to a Pacific cliff as one could imagine, was beyond adorable.  And as we took in panoramic views of mountains, cliffs, ocean, and forest, we instantly felt the feeling of vacation.

Big Sur Picnic

We walked our cooler down a curvy trail, lined with flowering succulents, to a wrought iron table and chairs we would claim as our own for the evening.  We laid out our spread, unscrewed our bottle of wine {how about that for planning head!}, and cheers-ed our wine-filled plastic cups.  Dozens of pictures later, we sat down to eat, drink, be merry, and post on social media, only to find.. we were without internet.

Big Sur - Dinner by the Sea

After a few minutes of shock about how we could be in the most Instagrammable spot of our lifetimes and not be able to Instagram, we laughed, joked about being both #blessed, but truly fortunate, and took it all in.

Big Sur Cliff Plants

Almost as soon as our giggling settled, we heard a noise that was reminiscent of frat boys “woo-ing”.  “What is that, a whale?”, I asked jokingly.  “Um yeah, it could totally be whales”, Ariel replied.  She ran over to the picket fence to find that the noise was, in fact, coming from wales.  Lots of wales {at least five}!  And we spent the remainder of our wifi-less evening, whale watching and silly-picture-taking.

Wanderlust Fest 2015

Wanderlust Festival 2015 Schedule

Thursday night, Amanda and I flew from Austin to Oakland {a Southwest, direct flight to San Francisco hack}, met up with Lex who was meeting us from Tampa, and took the metro to Lauren’s apartment in the Marina District.  We hit the road early the next morning to Squaw Valley, all of us unsure of what we’d signed ourselves up for.  But we used the ride to catch ourselves up with our schedules and, 3-1/2 hours later, we successfully planes-trains-and-automobile-ed our way to this year’s Wanderlust Festival.

Lake Tahoe SUP Yoga

First on my Friday schedule was SUP yoga in the middle of Lake Tahoe.  What a way to get into vacation mode!  It was a tough class, balancing on a paddle board in the middle of boat season on a choppy lake.  Difficulty aside, breathing in the fresh lake air with my fingers dipping into the cool water during final savasana was one of the greatest experiences of my life and was the perfect festival kick-off.

Other than a super informative chi running course {which I’ll be putting into practice when I return to Austin}, I didn’t have much on the books.  I wandered around the festival scoping out where my Saturday classes would take place, sampling and re-sampling all of the delish treats from food sponsors, and looking through lots of fun yoga gear from clothing vendors.

Aireal Yoga Squaw Valley

Saturday was a different, jam packed, story.  I woke up bright and early and headed to the fest to grab avocado toast and coffee from a food truck that Amanda said was a must {which it was}.  But by the time my breakfast was ready, my first session had already begun {oops!}.  I decided it was in my best interest to stay put, enjoying a slow-paced meal with friendly strangers rather than rush to a meditation class.

Aireal Yoga Wanderlust Festival

And when my next class started, I was glad I fueled up.  A powerful core AiReal Yoga practice taught by the founder of aerial yoga – I must not have read the description!  But with Carmen’s instruction, I flowed in the air for the next hour, paying more attention to how unique this experience was rather than how difficult.  At the end, we prepared for final savasana by cocooning ourselves in our hammocks.  Although gently spinning through the air in the middle of mountains was my second favorite savasana {in life}, this session was my favorite of the fest.

Granite Chief Trail Squaw Valley Hike

After AiReal Yoga, I met up with Amanda and Lauren for a hike up the Granite Chief Trail.  The hike took us from 6,200 to 6,700 feet which made us sea level dwellers huff and puff.  I’ve never spent any time skiing, so it was incredibly shocking how much the altitude affected us.

Granite Chief Trail Yoga

The hike was filled with ah-mazing views.  The scale of the surrounding mountains was so grand that, every time I looked up, it was hard to believe I was there, in the middle of it all, and that everything was real, not perfectly painted backdrops.

After hiking, I spent some solo time by the pool, listening to tunes, thinking about my future, and prioritizing the whats and whos that mean the most to me.  This has been an incredible experience for reflection!

Squaw Valley Highest Point

And then we topped off our day by being lifted to 8,200 feet, where our dinner was waiting for us.  And then headed back down for Thievery Corporation.

My Wanderlust Saturday was a mix of every single thing you could hope for a Saturday to include.  There are already talks about which fest we’ll attend next year.  But in the meantime, I’m off to enjoy a few more classes before heading back to the city tonight and my city tomorrow!

Seattle Vacation – Day 2

April 30, 2015 by Kristin

Jade Garden Seattle Dim Sum

Day 2 of Seattle weekend with FoodFash mom was totally front-loaded with food.  Our first stop was for dim sum at Jade Garden in the International District.  We walked up to a giant, but fast-moving, line.  And within minutes, we were served tea as dumpling carts swarmed our table offering us this and that.  There wasn’t much we turned down.  And with very full bellies, and our most satisfying dim sum experience to date, we were on our way.

Fuji Bakery Seattle

It took about two blocks and one beautiful pastry shop to create space for brunch dessert.  Yep, brunch dessert!  The pastry display at Fuji Bakery quickly convinced us that brunch dessert should be a thing.  Almond croissant, cinnamon roll {made with laminated dough}, and cream puff, all served on the most princess of plates.  I’d do it again if I could.

Pike Place Market Seattle

It was a super sunshiny day for Seattle and everyone was out and about.  We decided to join them by walking the mile and change to Pike Place Market, where fish were a flyin’ and crabs were a chillin’.

Pike Place Market Dungeness Crabs

I was oozing with envy for Seattleites as I passed by {reasonably priced} fresh, giant seafood and fresh, giant flowers.  “If I was a Seattleite, I could be one of those people that makes a habit out of fresh flowers at home.”, I thought.

I bet FoodFash mom {an urban planner, by day} was having lots of If I was a Seattleite thoughts as well.

After all of our seafood sightings, we were on a mission for a whole dungeness crab.  So we headed next door to Cutters Crabhouse to feast with a view.

Cutters Crab House Seattle

Our time together {and with Seattle} was too short, but after such a wonderful weekend, it won’t be long before FoodFash mom and I rendezvous.  Toronto, perhaps?

Seattle Vacation – Day 1

April 23, 2015 by Kristin

Ballard Street Bucketfeet

Looking back, it’s pretty stinking unbelievable how much FoodFash mom and I were able to accomplish during our weekend trip to Seattle.  Friday was spent mostly in the air.  But Saturday… her eastern time body woke up in the sixes and headed out to a work function.  An hour later, my central time self crawled out of bed and quickly researched the best shopping in Seattle and the best brunch in that particular hood.

The virtual world directed me toward Ballard Avenue and The Hi Life.  I headed to the bus stop like I knew what I was doing, like it hadn’t been eight years since my feet hit Seattle pavement.  But all went well, thanks to the King County Metro app, and I was dropped a few blocks from the restaurant without a hitch.

Hi Life Brunch

I requested a table for one {near a window} and sipped my coffee out of a thick-rimmed mug as I waited for my breakfast to arrive.  Green chile grits and eggs with black beans, chorizo, and pico – there was just no reason to continue reading past the spring specials on the menu.  And when it arrived, I wondered why I’d never seen {or made} black beans and grits before.  It was quite the combination!

Prism Seattle

After I stuffed myself silly, I hit Ballard Street and 20th Ave and worked my way towards 22nd.  How wonderful it was to try on clothing after being the freshest member of the clean plate club.  But fullness aside, I loved the street before stepping foot in a store.  Ballard, tree-lined with mid-rise historic buildings filled with independent retailers, was a street worth loving.  And it took only a few stops to find my favorite store {ever} {seriously}: Prism.  I chatted it up with the sales clerk and… purchased every variety of cropped top Native Youth had to offer.  New favorite store, new favorite brand.  No other shop on the strip compared, but I continued browsing until it was time to swoop my mom up.

Car2Go Seattle

In a Car2Go!  I was all sorts of excited to use my Austin Car2Go membership in Seattle.  I put the keys in the ignition and {for the second time} acted like I was cruising down familiar streets.

Cafe Presse Seattle

It was on FoodFash mom’s list to check out Capitol Hill, so we parked in that area and asked around for lunch suggestions.  We were directed to Cafe Presse, a French bar-cafe, that was oh so cozy.  And I was ready for cozy food and drink.  The chicken liver terrine and a Last Word cocktail hit the spot.  Then I introduced her to Chartreuse, filled her in how the Blue Album was playing overhead on repeat, and we caught each other up on our mornings.  It was beautiful.

Kurt Cobain's House Seattle

From there we headed down Lake Washington Boulevard, gawking at incredible houses with even more incredible views, before arriving at 171 {Kurt Cobain’s house}.  It was an odd feeling, the entire experience. Taking a picture in front of a house, in front of a random someone’s house, was strange.  And knowing what took place yards away 21 years ago, eerie.  It felt wrong to smile.  So I didn’t.

We soaked up more lakefront views and then headed to our dinner reservation at Lark.  At that moment, I felt like I couldn’t have had a better food day.  Every place was exactly what I hoped for and Lark was no exception.  We shared the Montana wagyu steak tartare and the {unpictured} Olsen Farm’s potato leek soup and Semolina gnocchi with artichoke hearts, anchovy, guanciale and toasted pine nuts.  And we uncharacteristically snuck in last bites rather than offering them up because everything was that delicious.

It was another perfect Saturday with FoodFash mom for the books!
