Unconventional Love Songs For Valentine Season

February 12, 2015 by Kristin

Valentine Season

A couple years ago, I created a Love Songs for Saint Valentine post that included a collection of some of my favorite love songs to date.  And although these songs still make a regular appearance on my playlist, the love songs I gravitate to in the present day are more relevant to a love that is gritty and imperfect.  Kind of. Like. My pie crust.

Homemade Gluten-Free Waffles {Topped With An Egg}

January 19, 2015 by Kristin

Gluten Free Dairy Free Waffles Topped with Eggs

For years, I’ve used this pancake/waffle recipe.  It yields the fluffiest, most perfect pancakes or waffles you can imagine.  And it served as a my go-to base batter for several different flavored waffles.   There was never a need to modify, until I went gluten-free.

Homemade Waffles with Vinegar

For six months, I’d been dreading substituting gluten-free flour in this recipe.  I had a fear that they’d be flat and dense and that my biggest homemade breakfast go-to would be gone.  But after playing around with gluten-free flours, baking powder, and baking soda for the past few weeks, I was finally ready to give gluten-free waffles a shot.

And I’m so glad I did.  I also swapped out the dairy with coconut oil and coconut milk to make these waffles dairy-free in addition to gluten-free.  And I’m happy to report that these waffles are every bit as delicious as I remember!

When using gluten-free flours, be sure to check the label for other allergens, such as dairy {Cup for Cup contains milk powder}.  I used King Arthur gluten-free multi-purpose flour for this recipe.  And I am expecting a package full of Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free flours in the mail to play around with as well.

DIY Mod Podge Planter

DIY Mod Podge Planter 2

One of the best things that’s happened since the creation of FoodFash is the realization that creating things, being a maker, is huge part of what makes me happy.  Whether it be with knives and pots, scissors and fabric, or lens and subject – spending time with my crafty side to the tune of a nostalgic playlist is, often times, right where I need to be.

DIY Mod Podge_

So right before the new year, when I had this overwhelming urge to renovate my bedroom, I knew I wanted to balance purchased items with some DIY.  A few Google searches later and I was acquainted with Mod Podge and “fine paper”.  I first made canvases to hang on the wall and then, with the leftover paper, experimented with a planter.  A planter that is too cute and too easy not to share!

DIY Mod Podge Planter

Supplies:

– Wood Planter {Ikea – $5.99}

– Fine Paper {Paper Source – $6.50}

– Mod Podge

– Tools: Scissors, Pencil, Paint Brush

Directions:

1.  Place the side of the planter on the paper, making sure the direction of the print is correct.

2.  Trace around the planter {repeat until you have 4 traced shapes}.

3.  Cut out the shapes and set aside.

3.  Use the paint brush to generously coat Mod Podge on one side of the planter.

4.  Place one of the paper shapes on the planter and, starting from one side, gently press the paper onto the planter, removing any creases or bubbles {repeat on each side}

5.  Let the planter dry for about 30 minutes.

Bookshelf Desk < $150

Bookshelf Desk with Plants Labeled

A few days before the new year, I had this overwhelming urge to renovate my bedroom.  I resumed a Pinterest addiction that was reminiscent of 2010 and scoured pins of pillow arrangements, rugs, and window treatments, hoping to find ideas that I could {straight up} copy.  I rushed out of the office early on New Year’s Eve with this pin and this pin fresh in my mind.  And at my first stop, Homegoods, I found nothing.

I lapped around the store a second time, remembering why my previous decorating attempts had failed so miserably.  Always in a rush, I resorted to picking items that fit an image that I liked, but not an image that I loved for me.  And then I stumbled upon a cluster of olive green pillows {green is my favorite color} and went from there, picking up only items that really worked, leaving everything else behind.

Two days, intermittent Pinterest guidance, and eight stores later – my bedroom was almost complete. And then it hit me, the need for a plant shelf {more green} on the only remaining blank wall.  The ninth store, Ikea, would be the start of one of my favorite designs ever: a bookshelf desk.

A bookshelf desk that, furnished, would cost less than $150.

  • (2) EKBY GÄLLÖ & (3) EKBY AMUND
    • Mount so the bottom shelf is at 30″ above the floor
  • (5) various plants
  • (3) white ceramic plant pots
  • (1) basket weave plant pot {spray painted gold}
  • (1) wood plant pot {clad with decorative paper and mod podge}
  • (1) watering can {spray painted gold}
  • books {mix of vintage and modern}
  • postcards {that my vacation self set to my real-life self}
  • stationary
  • candles
  • other ideas: clocks, bookends, picture frames, records

A how-to for the wood/floral plant pot and a “reveal” post are in the works, so keep an eye out! In the meantime, here are a few of the shelving pins that I used for inspiration: pin 1, pin 2, pin 3, pin 4.
