A Quick Run

December 23, 2011 by Kristin

Between cookies and ice cream cake and all of the other unnecessary sweets in my house lately, I was in dire need of a run.  I whipped together a quick playlist and hit the pavement.

This was my first run without using the Personal Running Trainer app, which meant my first run without any walking involved.  Now that I’ve built up my endurance, I enjoy running to a physical marker rather than having timed runs.  I ran to what I thought was the halfway point for a 3-mile run, but missed the mark just a tad.  Looks like I need to do a little MapMyRun research before next time!

United Skates Of America

December 16, 2011 by Kristin

Last weekend, Laura and I brainstormed over Sunday beers and decided that rollerskating was going to happen in our near future. We also thought that red and green elf rollerskating was the only way to go.  We showed up United Skates of America’s adult night, excited, but not knowing what to expect.

We skated for three solid hours to 20% top 40, 80% classic rollerskating jams of the 80s and early 90s.  We couldn’t have picked a more fitting playlist if we had tried.  We heard Debbie Deb twice, and that’s all one could have hoped for.

Laura was a master skater and qualified to skate during the expert only, bounce skate sesh.  I, on the other hand, only had the basics down and still experienced the occasional “whoop whoop” moment where you feel like you’re going to bust it.  Overall, it was SO much fun.  I am totally down to do this on the regular!

A Quick Review

December 9, 2011 by Kristin

When I was at Whole Foods earlier this week, I stocked up on a couple emergency frozen meals.  Ordinarily, I buy the same Amy’s Organic Mexican meals every time.  But during this stroll down the frozen aisle, I noticed a heavily discounted new brand and decided to give it a shot.  I’m glad I did!

While microwaving, I made the connection between Candle Cafe Vegan and Candle 79.  I was so pumped because it brought back memories of when my friend Cesa and I dined at Candle 79 when I visited her in NYC in 2009.  The frozen meal was obviously no match to the amazeballs Candle 79 experience, but it was a nice change-up from my ordinary.  The macaroni & cheese and tofu spinach ravioli were out of stock, but I’ll be keeping an eye out for them during my next trip to the market.

On a side note, I finished Week 6, Day 3 of the Personal Running Trainer app! I’m still amazed at how well this program has enabled me to go from only being able to run a few minutes at a time to running for almost 30 minutes straight!

Even though 11 of the 40 minutes were a brisk walk (5 minute warm-up and 5 minute cool-down), I still have a lot of work to do in the speed department.   I’m hoping that yoga and barre fitness classes will help me build muscle and, in turn, make me a fast(er) runner.

Do you have any tips for increasing your running speed?

It’s Been A While

November 28, 2011 by Kristin

I haven’t been to yoga in the park in a loooooong time!  Between smoking hot summer weather and the fear of further damaging my car accident neck, I had built up quite the aversion to this former favorite.

To say I was rusty was an understatement.  The first downward dog of my practice was… hard.  By the time I started enjoying myself, it was time for our final chaturanga.  But even if it was only for a small moment, I did enjoy myself, which means I’ll surely bring yoga in the park back into my Sunday routine!

After yoga I stopped at Greenwise to pick up some sushi, which didn’t look good.  I ended up getting vegetable soup, rice, and peas from the salad bar. Vegetable soup that I thought had noodles in it (don’t those white things look like  noodles?!).  Nope.  White string beans.  So disappointed.
